Wane open to the idea of Tomkins returning to Wigan

Sam Tomkins - CROPPED

Luring fans' favourite Sam Tomkins back to the DW Stadium from the New Zealand Warriors represents an interesting prospect for Wigan Warriors coach Shaun Wane.

Reports on Friday suggested that the full-back – who is currently out for six weeks with a knee injury - is homesick after departing Wigan to move to the NRL at the beginning of last year.

Tomkins' older brother Joel left the Super League club for a spell in rugby union before returning to his beloved Wigan in June and speculation is rife that Sam could do likewise.

"He is a great player and he is one of our lads," said Wane after Wigan's 52-10 demolition of Wakefield Wildcats in Super League on Friday.

"We would always be interested in great players and he is one of the world's best."

However, Wane added: "I don't know what the situation is.

"I rang him last week when he got injured to see how he was and that was it. We never mentioned anything else."
