The Repeat Set: Stewart brothers, Paine, Thorpe

Stewart double-act on its last legs?

When Brett Stewart turned down home-town team St George Illawarra for Manly more than a decade ago, he did so on one proviso. "I want you to sign my brother as well," he told Sea Eagles officials. Now he may need to use his influence again to convince Manly to retain Glenn beyond this season. The older Stewart is off contract at the end of 2014 and may be squeezed out due to salary cap restrictions. The Stewart brothers have a huge say at Manly and the other players looked up to them immensely. It could turn ugly if Glenn is forced to walk.

Warnie sledging embarrassing

If Tim Paine is a 'fourth grade wicket-keeper', as Shane Warne described him, then Australian cricket is in better shape than we thought. Warne's pathetic bully-boy attempt to suck up to Eddie McGuire and his old Stars teammates by sledging Paine showed once again why he should never be in control of anything bigger than a kids' Milo T20 team. That he could be even suggested as head coach of anything is laughable.

Be careful what you read

So Ian Thorpe wasn't seeking treatment for depression? That's what his management team had you believing early last week. The official line was that he was in hospital for shoulder surgery – but then came a dramatic tumble-turn when the Olympic champ was found wandering the streets in a disorientated state a few days later. We had similar denials when news broke of rugby union's interest in Sam Burgess. Why didn't Burgess, a regular social media user, go on Twitter and tell us all it was bullshit? Because it wasn't. You can believe what you read (most of the time!).

Fruit salad for BBL celebs?

Ever wondered what those celebrity catches on Channel 10's Big Bash League get paid for standing around like a spare you-know-what in the million-to-one hope of snaring a six? Try a bowl of fruit. Well, that's what Brisbane league star Corey Parker received for his night's work at the Gabba. Do apples and pears come under the salary cap?

Blues have had enough of Raudonikis

Tommy Raudonikis is a great rugby league character from a bygone era. He played his heart out for any side he ran out with. But the truth is the current NSW Blues have had enough of his bagging and suggestions they don't possess enough passion. As someone who has visited losing NSW dressing-rooms for the past eight years, you can rest assured the losses to Queensland hurt. A lot. The players see Raudonikis as a negative and that's why he wasn't invited to join the team and former captains at a recent dinner. Tommy's outrageous reaction to being brushed only confirmed their beliefs.
