Hayne Plane's not so plain deal

So what sort of deal did Jarryd Hayne strike with Hawaiian Airlines to justify all the publicity he gave them on Sunday?

Hayne held a press conference at the airport five hours before he was due to fly out to ensure the airline received maximum exposure, even having enough time to drive back to his mother's home and then return for the flight later that night.

The NFL hopeful appeared in front of a Hawaiian Airlines backdrop for his interview and was even snapped being served a drink on the plane before it took off.

There was speculation on Monday that Hayne may have secured free flights to LA for himself and his four-man entourage.

One person with connections to the airline industry told The Repeat Set: "If he didn't get free flights then they would have at least looked after him with upgrades.

"He gave them thousands of dollars' worth of exposure."

Hayne is already proving as media savvy as some of the American sports star he wishes to emulate.

NRL bad boys resurface

It hasn't been a great weekend for rugby league off the field.

Roosters player Frank-Paul Nu'uausala was with a group that got involved in a brawl outside the Golden Sheaf Hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving a 35-year-old man with a broken nose.

Nu'uausala did not throw a punch but was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And now we have reports of Cowboys and Samoan centre Tautau Moga being arrested in Brisbane following a night on the tiles over the weekend.

Just as worrying, Samoan captain Reni Maitua is understood to have been at the nightclub where the alleged incident took place.

We will have to wait and see where this one ends up

Izzy could go the distance

Ewen McKenzie's departure from the Wallabies job may just have saved them losing their only superstar player.

The Repeat Set has been told McKenzie and Israel Folau did not speak a word to each other for three weeks in the lead-up to the coach's exit, leading Izzy to question his long-term future in the code.

Folau is firmly in the Kurtley Beale camp, putting him in opposition to McKenzie following the Di Patston drama.

It would have all come to a head had McKenzie stayed, but the expected arrival of Michael Cheika as coach will ensure Folau stays the distance in rugby.

And he may even extend his stay, such is his respect and admiration for Cheika.

Cheika's very demanding list

Still on Cheika, he will only take the national job on his terms. Before taking over at the Waratahs two years ago, the fiery mentor sought assurances CEO Jason Allen would not meddle in rugby matters.

It is understood Cheika wants a similar agreement with ARU boss Bill Pulver, essentially giving him total control of the Wallabies program. He'll also want his own staff put in place and at least a three-year deal to give him time to put his stamp on the Wallabies squad.

It is unlikely Pulver will hand over full control to the volatile Cheika, who has a six-month suspended ban hanging over his head for threatening a South African cameraman earlier this year with the Waratahs.

Maybe the best outcome for all concerned would be for Pulver to walk away altogether.

Bulldogs tactics employed in derby

Clearly, Sydney FC defender Sasa Ognenovski spent the off-season closely studying the antics of two other players in blue and white – Mick Ennis and Josh Reynolds.

Ognenovski employed the Ennis-Reynolds niggle tactics on a frustrated Western Sydney Wanderers in Saturday's A-League derby, pushing, shoving, sledging and generally causing mayhem for 90 minutes.

His get-under-your-skin approach even extended to teammates, with the Sydney No 3 pushing Vedran Janjetovic after the goalie had the temerity to help a WSW player suffering cramps.

Ognenovski somehow saw out the game after sitting on a yellow but his luck is set to run out when the match review panel take a close look at him lashing out at Vitor Saba's melon after the Brazilian was sent off for a horrible tackle.
