Saints ease past Castleford to move back to the summit

St Helens continued their perfect start to the new Super League season with a 21-14 victory over Castleford Tigers at Langtree Park.

The win went some way to banishing the painful memories of a 39-0 hammering at the hands of South Sydney Rabbitohs in the World Club Challenge last weekend.

Saints, the reigning Super League champions, made it three wins from three domestic matches this term with a battling display, and moved back to the top of the table - above Leeds Rhinos on points difference.

The Rhinos had momentarily displaced them with their 28-24 win over Huddersfield Giants on Thursday, but Saints responded with a victory of their own 24 hours later.

Adam Swift and Tommy Makinson tries put them 10-0 up at the break, and Josh Jones' score soon after the interval further increased their lead.

A quickfire brace from Justin Carney reduced the arrears to 14-12, before Mark Percival's score gave Saints some more breathing space with 17 minutes to go.

Jon Wilkin then landed a drop-goal to make it a two-score game, with Jordan Tansey's try a minute from time proving just a consolation for Castleford, who remains pointless after three matches.
