Penn family takes control of Manly: what does it mean?

Manly.

Q: What's happened?

A: The Penn family, headed by patriarch Rick, has bought the Quantum side of the Manly ownership and will now have total control in the club. The vote used to be split 4-3 against the Penns on every decision but they will now have the majority say. This will bring great stability to what was the NRL's most volatile board.

Q: Who is Rick Penn?

A: He is one of Australia's richest men through a range of business interests. He made a fortune as the CEO of Weight Watchers Australia and New Zealand.

Q: Where does this leave Anthony Watmough's deal with Parramatta?

A: Very much up in the air. Watmough has signed a three-year deal with the Eels starting 2016 but has plenty of time to back out of it. He hated the Quantum side of the board and the influence they were having on the Sea Eagles, particularly over the decision not to offer Glenn Stewart a contract. Those in the know still believe Watmough will walk but the Penns will attempt to turn him around.

Q: What about Glenn? Any chance he may stay?

A: That ship has now sailed. He will head to Souths but with a heavy heart.

Q: Ok, but surely Brett Stewart and Steve Matai will now hang around?

A: The chances of Brett staying are a million times better today than they were this time yesterday. He was at odds with the Quantum members and couldn't even bring himself to talk to them. He could now be a Sea Eagle for life. Matai's position is a little different in that he has been offered a huge deal by the Warriors. But he loves Manly and will stay if the club can come close to matching what the Kiwis are throwing at him.

Q: And Kieran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans?

A: The club will go all out to keep them both long-term. Foran was gone at the end of 2015 before all this went down, that's how crucial this decision is. He is seen as a future captain of the club. DCE will shop himself around next year and may still go to the highest bidder, but Manly want to retain him.

Q: Where does it leave Geoff Toovey?

A: Tooves tried his best to have one foot in both camps but that's impossible at Manly. The senior players are upset he didn't fight harder to retain Glenn Stewart and he'll need to resolve those differences if all are to move forward. But Toovey is no political animal and will be happy that peace has been brokered at Brookie.

Q: Manly CEO David Perry was firmly in Quantum's corner, what's the future now hold for him?

A: He's been labelled DWM (Dead Man Walking). It's hard to see Perry surviving. He has no allies left.

Q: Will this impact on the club's colours, emblems or location?

A: No. The Penns are committed to keeping all those traditions. In any case, the Manly Football Club members still has a 10 per cent stake and will ensure the name, logo, colours and where the club play does not change.

Q: How should the fans feel about all this?

A: They should be doing cartwheels down Manly Corso. This is the best early Christmas present they've ever had. The Penns are widely regarded and hugely successful businessmen with the club's best interests at heart. The Sea Eagles would have ripped apart over the next 12 months if this hadn't gone down.
