Merrin inks new deal

Minutes after pledging his loyalty to St George Illawarra until the end of 2015, prop Trent Merrin outlined his plans to stay a one-club man.

The NSW Origin rep extended his current deal to include three further seasons in the Red V and, despite only being 22, cannot ever see himself playing in another club's colours.

"It was an easy decision as I love the club and want to be able to play my whole career here," Merrin said after re-signing on Thursday.

"I have grown up watching players like Ben Hornby, Dean Young, Ben Creagh and Matt Cooper who are local boys and have been one-club players and I want to do that as well."

"I have learned so much already at this club and am excited about the future. I couldn't be happier knowing that I am here for at least the next three seasons."

A Shellharbour junior, Merrin made his first grade debut for the Dragons against Penrith in Round 12 of the 2009 season and has played 52 NRL games to date.

He played two matches for the Blues in the 2011 Origin series.

Dragons CEO Peter Doust said: "It is fantastic that Trent, another of our local juniors, has chosen to extend his stay with our club and we can all look forward to his ongoing positive contributions both on and off the field over the next few years."

"Long-term contracts can be difficult at times but I am delighted that we have been able to work through this challenge and retain such an exciting, established talent."

Merrin will be in action when the Dragons take on Canterbury at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
