Salford Red Devils' miserable start to the season took another turn for the worse when Gareth Hock was given a six-game ban for two incidents in the Super League thrashing against St Helens last week.

Hock missed the end of last season after he was suspended for seven matches for making deliberate contact with a referee and the 31-year-old forward is facing another lengthy ban.

The former England man was banned for three matches for striking Tommy Makinson in the knee in the second half and another three games for the same offence on Mose Masoe, which resulted in him being sin-binned.

Hock pleaded guilty to both offences and was on fined £600 by the Rugby Football League and will be sidelined until the clash with his former club Wigan on April 6.

Salford were hammered 52-6 by the champions at the AJ Bell Stadium in a one-sided encounter last Thursday after going down 22-8 at Warrington Wolves in their first Super League game of the season.
