Carney has it before him

A former Origin halfback one day, a Test No.7 the following week and the world's best player to finish up - that's some diary of appointments facing Cronulla playmaker Todd Carney over the next three rounds.

The Sharks star lines-up against Jarrod Mullen (Newcastle), Daly Cherry-Evans (Manly) and Johnathan Thurston (North Queensland) in consecutive weeks as he continues to rebuild his NRL career with the Shire club.

Carney produced an outstanding second half in the Sharks' golden-point loss to the Tigers in Round 1, scoring a try and setting up another, but acknowledges the pressure will only increase in coming weeks.

First cab off the rank is Mullen, who played for NSW in 2007 and is looking to resurrect his representative career under new Knights coach Wayne Bennett.

"Every week is a big match-up and it's always a good challenge playing against 'Mullo'," Carney said on Thursday.

"He's playing some good football. His trial form was good and he was good the other night (against the Dragons)."

"I thought he brought them back into the game. He's playing some good football and he always does."

As for Carney, he will look to get involved for the full 80 minutes after admitting he went quiet in the first half against the Tigers.

He said: "Obviously the first half was a little bit slow but I built into the game and hopefully I can improve on that this week and just keep working as the season goes on."

Sharks coach Shane Flanagan doesn't expect Carney to be at his best until the season is several rounds old and he becomes more familiar with the side's pattern of play and the players around him.

"Todd will get better the more games he plays with us," Flanagan predicted.

"He'd done a lot of training but he hasn't played with a lot of those players, especially with our nine (hooker Isaac De Gois)."

"He will get better as time goes on."

Cronulla and Newcastle will be looking to open their premiership accounts after both were first-round golden-point losers.
