Bennett loses it over 'hypocrite' players

After ending their regular season with a 15-8 win over the Broncos, an unimpressed Smith and Bellamy questioned why they had been asked to play three games in 10 days before the NRL final.

The pair also revealed the Rugby League Players Association will make a formal request to the NRL to abolish the five-day turnaround, prompting an angry response from Bennett.

"Players are being hypocritical too," he quipped.

"We go through Origin then back up in two days and play in the toughest game they play," he said.

"They want to be fair dinkum they will make changes there as well and that won't happen.

"That is double standards and I hate double standards. On one hand everyone wants so much money on the other hand we want something off here and something else off here.

"Why do we get so much money for our game... because we all watch it.

"If you don't have five day turnarounds you don't get the best games on prime time.

"Next time they go to rights they won't get the income. That's the issue.

"At some point the players have to recognise all the money they are making is from the commitments they have to make on the field.

"It is a balancing act so we have to be careful."

But Smith, the Queensland and Australia captain, says something has to give.

"The players have given notice to the RLPA that we aren't happy with five day turnarounds," he said.

"They will be taking that up quite strongly with the NRL and I would like to think there would be some movement or at least the NRL to talk to broadcasters about next year's draw.

"I can't believe we are here playing tonight to be honest but the NRL gave us the draw and we have done our best with it."

Bellamy claims the Storm’s recent schedule has left his players exhausted.

"We have played three games in the last ten days and 13 of the 16 teams have played one game in that time," Bellamy said.

"That's how ridiculous the last ten days have been.

"I have never seen a team this tired."
