Punters can't get enough of Queensland

05/08/2012 10:19:26 AM

With Cronulla captain Paul Gallen the latest big name New South Wales player to be in some doubt for the opening game of the State of Origin series against Queensland, it seems the punters have all but written off the Blues' hopes of ending the Maroons' record-breaking period of dominance.

Queensland have won the past six series and while Mal Meninga's side virtually picks itself, New South Wales coach Ricky Stuart has no shortage of worries.

Former captains Kurt Gidley and Danny Buderus have already been ruled out through injury while Michael Jennings is in doubt.

And while Gallen insists the knee injury he sustained against South Sydney on Monday night won't keep him out of Origin duties, he is expected to miss Cronulla's huge clash with league leaders Melbourne Storm on Sunday which is not a good sign for Blues' fans.

In contrast, Queensland has few worries ahead of game one in Melbourne on May 23.

And while all the Origin talk is surrounding just who will play where for New South Wales, the punters have seemingly already made up their minds who will win.

Online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au is reporting massive money for Queensland, who continue to firm to win both game one and the series.

Ben Hawes of sportsbet.com.au said the money has been running 16 to 1 in favour of Queensland winning game one and 15 to 1 in favour of them winning the three match series.

Queensland are now $1.63 to win game one in Melbourne and a $1.66 to win the series.

"Let's not forget we opened both sides at $1.90 each to win game one and the series," Hawes said.

"It seems the punters aren't fussed about who Ricky Stuart selects. They think the result is pretty much a forgone conclusion."

A Queensland win by 13 points plus at $4.75 has also been the best backed option in margin betting for game one, followed by a Queensland win by 1-12 points at $2.80.

"81 percent of money wagered on margin betting options has been on Queensland with 50 percent of that on them winning by 13 points plus," Hawes added.

"It certainly doesn't make for good reading if you're a Blues fan."

After both sides opened at $1.90 to win the opening game, weight of money forced Queensland's price into firstly a $1.77 and now a $1.63 while the Blues have drifted to firstly $2.05 and now $2.25 while the Blues are now $2.23 to win the series.
