Melbourne-based Englishman Gareth Widdop is keeping his international options open but makes no secret of his desire to one day play in Super League.
The 20-year-old utility back, who is poised to make his senior debut for Melbourne Storm in Sunday's World Club Challenge against Leeds Rhinos, put his hopes of playing for Bradford Bulls on hold when his family emigrated to Victoria four years ago.
Widdop is highly rated by Melbourne head coach Craig Bellamy but the former Halifax scholarship player says it remains an ambition of his to return to England and play at the highest level.
"Growing up here, I supported Bradford Bulls and always wanted to play for them," he said. "I'll definitely come back later on in my career and play in Super League."
As a fan, Widdop cheered Bradford to victory in the annual World Club Challenge but never dreamed he would one day play in one.
"The Bulls have played in a few but it's not televised too much over there so I've not followed it much these last few years," he said. "But when I was a kid I used to enjoy it."
"If I got to play on Sunday, it would be mind-blowing. I never thought this would happen."
"Craig hasn't announced the team yet but I'll be in the mix. If I get the opportunity, I'll take it with both hands, if not it's just an experience coming over and being around the world's best players."
Although he has become an adopted Australian, Widdop insists he is still a Pom at heart and has yet to give consideration as to whether he would be prepared to switch his allegiance from England.
"I haven't really thought about it too much," he said. "I'm not too sure what I'd do. I'll see how I go in the next few years."
