Wesser to repay faith

Wesser to repay faith

02/25/2010 08:08:52 AM

It's rare in the day and age of footballers looking after number one to actually hear a player say he owes the club something.

But Rhys Wesser feels he is in South Sydney's debt after playing just two games for the Bunnies last year in his first season at the club.

The former Panther suffered a knee injury in round two and spent the rest of the year in rehab or away from rugby league completely.

Back for Saturday night's Charity Shield clash against the Dragons, the classy full-back is desperate to make up for lost time.

"I came here last year and only played two games so I don't want to leave it like that," Wesser said on Thursday.

"I want to get out there again in the green and red."

"They've taken me on and they've treated me quite well here and it's been a great club to be with."

"I hope this season I can repay them and get out there and do what I can."

"It's been a long time - since March last year, round two against Parramatta – that I played and I can't wait to get out there on Saturday night."

While he is loving life at Redfern, the usually upbeat Wesser admits being around the club last year became depressing as the lonely weeks in rehab dragged on.

With the club's blessing he cleared out of the place for a while, returning when he was mind was fully re-focused.

"I thought it would be four or five weeks (before I could return) but it kept on getting extended," he said.

"It was frustrating sitting on the couch watching or being in the grandstand."

"Part of the healing process was getting away from footy. I just got footy out of my head and the healing process took over because I wasn't thinking about getting back the next week or the week after."

Blessed with blinding speed and terrific evasive skills, Wesser's early worries than the knee injury may have blunted his pace have eased.

"The knee's good - I've been in rehab now for a long time now. We've taken it step by step and at the moment everything's good."

"I feel like I haven't lost any speed which is miraculous because I've been out for so long."

"I'm quite nervous (about Saturday night) actually. It's like my debut to come out again, but I'm looking forward to it."
