Seymour: I'm the leader

Seymour: I'm the leader

03/02/2010 12:52:55 AM

Steve Price is the former captain, Simon Mannering the current, but experienced halfback Brett Seymour says he will lead the Warriors to the top eight this year.

It will not be an easy task for the 101-game, 18-try veteran, both stepping into Stacey Jones' boots and trying to turnaround a club that failed miserably in finishing 14th last season.

"I will bring a different style to what Stacey had. It will take a bit of getting used to but I'll be the leader and I'm looking forward to it," Seymour said.

"I want to show them that they haven't made the wrong decision by bringing me over here."

The talented 25-year-old, who debuted for the Broncos at 17 and was compared to Allan Langer, has been thrown a lifeline as the Warriors had immense trouble attracting a playmaker to New Zealand's shores.

Sacked by the Broncos in 2006 for repeated alcohol related incidents, his misdemeanours continued at the Sharks where his contract was terminated in July 2009 after he was caught punching a bathroom mirror at a nightclub in Cronulla.

The news got worse as Seymour was unable to gain a UK visa, because of a 2008 drink driving conviction, and in a sharp reality-check he was forced to revert to bricklaying for a living.

"I'm surprised to be in this place at the moment," Seymour said.

"The time doing bricklaying really opened my eyes and I don't want to be doing that sort of stuff just yet."

But what has changed since July 09 and can Seymour repay the faith shown by the Warriors by staying off the grog?

"I wouldn't say I had counselling because it was a bit more in depth than that.

"I'm in the right mind frame now and have got things in my life that I lean back on such as my fiancée Roseanne, my family and my dogs.

"I don't need to revert to partying and that garbage for enjoyment."

At 93kg Seymour will probably pair with Joel Moon (90kg) in the halves which will provide more starch than last year.

"I have plenty to offer," the Mackay born Queenslander said.

"I've got a good kicking game and these days teams target you in defence, but I don't mind getting a bit physical and enjoy the defensive side of things."

With Price still to come back into the forward mix and a couple of young guys impressing in the trials, Seymour was confident his pack would allow him enough time and space to ignite the attack and further familiarise himself with the running lines of his new team-mates.

He will be hoping to perform both on and off the field as NRL chief executive David Gallop has warned the Warriors they will be heavily sanctioned if Seymour steps out of line.

"It comes back to our results and that'll ultimately decide if it was the right decision to bring me here.

"I'm certain we have the right mix to improve on last year. It's been great so far, but you can never train for what round one is like and the business is about to start."
