Ross close to return

03/04/2010 01:18:21 AM

Rabbitohs recruit Ben Ross has moved a step closer to making his return from a serious neck injury after his surgeon confirmed he is on target to return to the field in the coming weeks.

Ross, who broke his neck in Round 1 of the 2009 season whilst playing for Cronulla, will undergo one final check next Thursday before he is granted clearance to resume his NRL career.

But while the 29-year-old faces yet another nervous wait, his surgeon is very pleased with the progress of the bone fusion in his neck and indicated that Ross will more than likely be given the all clear next week.

"We've had great news today about Ben's recovery from his neck injury," Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson said.

"His surgeon wants one final consultation with him to ensure he has recovered completely. We're happy to wait one more week to get Ben's final clearance as his health is our No.1 priority and in no way, shape or form will we rush him back into playing."

"He is involved in all of our training now and I'm sure all of our members are looking forward to seeing him in the red and green jersey, just as much as he is."

While he had hoped to have received his final medical clearance several weeks ago, Ross says that after nearly 12 months of recovery, he can survive six more sleepless nights.

"It was great to hear what my surgeon had to say today and I'm really excited about next week," the former Queensland prop said.

"Our whole squad is working really hard and I want to play my part in the team as best I can."

"I'll be doing everything I can to earn a spot in the top 17 and I can't wait to get back out on the field and play Rugby League again."
