'Roos crush Wales

11/13/2011 07:55:39 PM

Australia will enter the Four Nations final in winning form after overcoming a slow start to beat Wales 56-14 in Wrexham on Monday.

The Kangaroos conceded the first eight points of the match before responding, although Wales did provide a stern test at the Racecourse Ground ahead of Saturday's final against England.

Cooper Cronk crossed for a hat-trick of tries, while Johnathan Thurston (eight from nine) was in fine form with the boot.

But it was Wales who made the brighter start with winger Rhys Williams and Elliot Kear touching down in the first 14 minutes.

Wales captain Lee Briers, playing in his final international game, had a hand in both tries, but also missed his two conversion attempts.

Australia hit back to be 18-8 up at the break after Cronk went over twice and Melbourne Storm teammate Cameron Smith also scored a four-pointer.

They ran away with it in the second half, with debutant Daly Cherry-Evans and fullback Darius Boyd - who impressed as a replacement for the injured Billy Slater – extending their advantage.

Wales kept in touch thanks to Jordan James, who capitalised on another well-placed Briers kick, but Australia dominated the final 20 minutes.

Thurston, Greg Inglis and Jharal Yow Yeh crossed, Cronk completed his treble and Josh Morris put on the finishing touches to make it three wins from as many games for Australia, while Wales end the tournament winless.
