Riley sinks Quins

Riley sinks Quins

02/07/2010 07:44:13 PM

Chris Riley became the first Warrington player to score five touchdowns in a Super League match as Harlequins were on the receiving end of an 11-try blitz on Sunday.

There was joy too for Adrian Morley who celebrated the arrival of his second child by leading his side to a mesmerising victory.

The Wolves skipper had a sleepless night with partner Clare giving birth to a daughter in the early hours of Sunday morning, but he insisted on playing for Warrington in its first match of the 2010 season.

Quins thrashed Warrington 60-8 at the Twickenham Stoop in Tony Smith's second match in charge of the Wolves last March, but there was never any chance of a repeat with the Wolves ripping into the Quins from the start and leading 12-0 after only seven minutes.

Right winger Riley's haul was only one short of Lesley Vainikolo's Super League record of six for Bradford against Hull in 2005.

It was 28-0 at the break with Ben Harrison and Ben Westwood outstanding in a pack superbly led by Morley and man of the match Garreth Carvell.

Quins were bidding for only their second win in 14 matches having gone down 18-10 in their opening Super League clash against Wakefield last week when Ben Jones-Bishop, on loan from Leeds, notched their two tries.

But the Londoners were without Jones-Bishop and big guns Rob Purdham, Luke Dorn, Karl Temata and Jon Wells with Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook suspended.

Challenge Cup holders Warrington handed Richie Myler, Ryan Atkins and David Solomona debuts but were missing injured Chris Hicks and Jon Clarke in front of an 11,678 crowd.

Myler, the 200,000 pound capture from Salford, took only three minutes to make his mark with his smart inside pass enabling Carvell to charge over and Lee Briers tagged on the conversion.

Richie Mathers cut inside Danny Orr and Jamie O'Callaghan for the second try before Quins had Chad Randall sin-binned after 20 minutes.

Myler was denied a possible debut try when he collided with referee Thierry Alibert trying to take Mathers' pass but Quins' relief was short-lived with Michael Monaghan darting over from his quickly-taken tap penalty.

Warrington extended the lead with Chris Bridge bursting through from dummy-half.

The advantage stretched to 28-0 at the break with slick passing putting Riley over - Briers missing his first conversion.

Warrington's adventure was rewarded with Riley's second try after 47 minutes following unselfish play from Westwood, with Solomona's artistry evident in the build-up.

Riley finished off two more slick moves in quick succession to give him four tries in 14 minutes before Myler got in on the act to stretch the lead to 48-0.

Briers' inventive kick straight from a scrum brought Riley his fifth try after 65 minutes before Simon Grix went over.

Quins were powerless to stop the onslaught for most of the afternoon but managed to hold out for the last 12 minutes, although the darting Myler had a late effort disallowed for a forward pass.
