Hollywood star Russell Crowe is reportedly set to sell off his financial stake in South Sydney at the end of next season.

A report on Sunday indicated the Academy Award winner will announce he is pulling out of the club six years after winning control alongside businessman Peter Holmes a Court in a bloody takeover.

He told members at the vote to decide the club's future in 2006: "Let's get in bed together. I hope you respect me in the morning."

Neither the club nor Crowe have officially commented on reports he now wants out.

Crowe, a lifetime Rabbitohs fan, and Holmes a Court hold a 75 percent share of the club and have tipped in around $11 million since taking control.

But with the movie star about to go through expensive divorce proceedings with estranged wife Danielle Spencer, it is believed he is keen to free up funds.

Under Crowe's stewardship, Souths became the glamour club of the NRL.

The Rabbitohs emblem was sported by overseas music, movie and sports stars thanks to Crowe's extensive connections.

On the field, Souths' fortunes have also been growing.

They reached the NRL top four for the first time in 2012, making it to the penultimate week of the finals before losing to grand finalists Canterbury.
