Mannering to miss opener

Mannering to miss opener

03/09/2010 03:41:21 AM

Warriors captain Simon Mannering will miss his side's first game of the NRL season against the Gold Coast Titans on Sunday with a hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old, who was gearing up for his first game as captain, was ruled out as it was deemed to risky at this stage of the season by coach Ivan Cleary.

"Simon's close to being right but there's no point in playing him at this stage of the season until we're all satisfied he's ready to go," Cleary said.

"Hopefully he'll be able to play next week but we won't rush things."

Micheal Luck will instead lead the side, as he did last year when standing in for Steve Price and in the club's last two trials earlier in the year.

Luck is just two matches away from playing his 100th game for the club.

In place of Mannering, a spot has opened for Junior Warriors back rower Sione Lousi who is named on a five-man bench.

The 20-year-old featured in all of the Warriors' three trials against the Sydney Roosters, North Queensland and Manly and did a superb job according to Cleary.

"He did a terrific job in every match and he has also worked really hard throughout the off-season," said Cleary.

New recruits James Maloney, Brett Seymour and Jeremy Latimore will also make their first NRL appearances for the Warriors.

On Tuesday Cleary confirmed Maloney, who made four appearances for the Melbourne Storm last year, would have the first opportunity to partner Brett Seymour in the halves.

"There's a lot of competition for that spot, which is a good thing for us, and Jimmy showed in the trials that he deserves a shot at the job this time," he said.

Lance Hohaia is named to start at fullback, after his excellent job in the two trials he played against North Queensland and Manly, forcing Wade McKinnon on the interchange.

Also ruled out for this match were Steve Price (heel) and Jacob Lillyman (foot).

Warriors side to play Gold Coast Titans:

Lance Hohaia, Kevin Locke, Brent tate, Jerome Ropati, Manu Vatuvei, James Maloney, Brett Seymour, Sam Rapira, Aaron Heremaia, Russell Packer, Lewis Brown, Ben Matulino, Michael Luck (captain)
Interchange: Wade McKinnon, Jeremy Latimore, Jesse Royal, Sione Lousi, Joel Moon.
