North Queensland recruit Robert Lui will undergo scans after suffering a knee injury at training on Friday morning.
The 21-year-old, who was released by the Wests Tigers last November and immediately snapped up on a two-year deal by the Cowboys, hurt his right knee in a training mishap.
"Robert will have scans tomorrow," Cowboys football manager Peter Parr said.
"We should have the results on Monday following consultation between our doctor and medical staff."
"We are confident it's not a serious injury and cannot comment or speculate any further until we have the scan results."
Lui, who will answer assault charges in a Sydney court on March 21, is among the candidates to partner superstar Johnathan Thurston in the halves for the Cowboys.
The former Tiger is in competition with Ray Thompson and Michael Morgan for the No.7 jersey, with Thurston set to shift to five-eighth.
Lui is hoping to make his club debut in the Cowboys' first trial against Brisbane on February 4.
