Four Warriors in line

Four Warriors in line for All Stars

12/28/2011 11:26:19 PM

Perennial favourite Manu Vatuvei, captain Simon Mannering, Shaun Johnson and Feleti Mateo are the four players jostling for the one available Warriors spot on the 2012 NRL All Stars team.

The four have made the final cut of 64 players who go into stage two of voting, which began on December 27 and wraps up on January 18 when the final squad is named.

Two forwards, Mannering and Mateo, along with Vatuvei and Johnson were named from all 16 NRL clubs.

Vatuvei is the red-hot favourite to be selected again given he was the Warriors' representative in 2010 and again this year, although he had to pull out the second time around due to injury.

But he will be pushed hard by the ever-popular Mannering, who led the Warriors to the grand final in his second year in charge, young gun Johnson after a sensational rookie year and Mateo, a new signing in 2011 who confirmed his ball-playing class with a fine first season in Auckland.

Somewhat surprisingly, for a rookie who chose to represent England as opposed to Australia at this year's Four Nations tournament, Broncos rookie Jack Reed led the voting across the board after the first stage.

Reed received 7812 votes, ahead of another unlikely name in Bulldogs flyer Josh Morris. The rest of the top 10 were Paul Gallen, Josh Dugan, Cooper Cronk, Jarryd Hayne, Luke Lewis, Nathan Hindmarsh, Fuifui Moimoi and Petero Civoniceva.

The likes of Robbie Farah, Brett Stewart, Anthony Watmough, Brett Morris and Warriors fullback Kevin Locke were amongst the big names who didn't poll well enough to make it through to the next stage.

Billy Slater, Darius Boyd, Kurt Gidley and Akuila Uate would have certainly been in the mix for the final 64 but are ruled out with various injuries.

NRL All Stars coach Wayne Bennett sat down for three days over Christmas assigning positions to the 64 players after the first stage was closed.

"I've got to say I am pleased with the names the fans have put forward in stage one of voting but I think the real challenge lies in this second phase, as there is a lot to consider,'' Bennett said.

"This is a tough task for the most experienced of selectors as not only do the fans have to think about shaping the side with the best player in each position, but they also need to consider that only one player from each club can be selected.

"The rivalry that voting creates between players is one of the great concepts about this match; like Origin, it is teammate against teammate and all the boys want to be a part of it."

The match against the Aboriginal All Stars takes place on February 4 at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.
