Eels would love Webb

Eels would love Webb

09/01/2010 07:55:20 PM

He may be unwanted by North Queensland but Carl Webb is just the type of player Parramatta need as they look to build a team strong enough to return to the finals next season.

That's the view of Eels co-captain Nathan Hindmarsh after reports the former Queensland Origin forward is set to join the 2009 grand finalists next season.

It's understood Webb, who has had a frustrating season in Townsville, will join the Eels on a two-year deal after spurning the offers of a couple of overseas clubs.

The 29-year-old has managed just 17 appearances this season, and only eight in the starting side, in a year where Webb has been plagued by injury and inconsistent form this season.

But Hindmarsh is confident the former Test prop can still have an impact in the NRL and be an asset to the Eels forward pack.

"If we can get him fit enough and he remains injury free then he'll be awesome," Hindmarsh said.

"You've only got to look at what he's done when he's played Origin."

"He's a scary type of player when you come up against him."

"He's got good footwork as well and good bump for a front-rower so he'll add some quality to our front row."

"It would be a great signing for us and just what we need."

Hindmarsh believes Webb is the perfect replacement for retiring Eels skipper Nathan Cayless, who will play his 259th and last match in the NRL against the Warriors on Saturday night.

While their finals hopes ended after their loss to the Rabbitohs last weekend, Hindmarsh said the Eels were desperate to give Cayless the perfect send-off - and hurt the Warriors top-four hopes in the process.

"We've got a lot to play...we have to send Nath out a winner," he said.

"The amount of stuff he's done for THE club and the type of player he is, he deserves to be sent out a winner."

"We'll be going out there to try our best and definitely trying to win the game."

"We're probably a team no one would like to play now because we can disrupt their semi-final aspirations."

"I think the Warriors will need to be on their best game to beat us."

Hindmarsh believes the Roosters and the Raiders are the two teams most likely to challenge the Dragons for the NRL title.

"I think big games are won on defence, if you defend well your attack will come and the Dragons have got (the defence) so they're ahead just from those other two teams," he said.

"If they play well the Roosters will be up there and the Raiders...I'm really excited by what they are doing."
