Burgess cool on captaincy

Burgess cool on captaincy

12/05/2011 07:13:10 PM

Sam Burgess has thrown his hat in the ring for the South Sydney captaincy but is urging coach Michael Maguire to stick with tried and true candidates.

The Englishman is under consideration for the job but believes current skipper Roy Asotasi or deputy Michael Crocker deserve to be the front-runners.

Burgess even rates new recruit Matt King ahead of him in the pecking order but won't turn down the opportunity should Maguire anoint him.

"It would be a great honour but it's probably getting a bit too far ahead of things at the minute," Burgess said.

"It's nice to have my name thrown up there but I think we've got a group of three or four leaders (where) anyone can do the job."

"There's some cracking guys in our team and cracking leaders...Michael Crocker, Roy Asotasi...Matt King has come in and he's a leader himself."

"The captaincy's at the back of my mind and something that's not affecting me at all."

"I'm not bothered. I'm concentrating on staying fit and getting myself in good shape for next year."

Asotasi started the 2010 season as captain but was replaced by Crocker after suffering a season-ending injury.

The former Queensland Origin rep did an admirable job as the Bunnies made a late-season dash to the finals before falling short in the final rounds.

Burgess made it clear he would have no problem if Crocker was to hold the job.

"Crocker has been and done everything in the game," he said

"He's played in premiership-winning sides and he's been a part of the game for a lot of years now."

"The pure enthusiasm he brings to the team and just his energy around the place is infectious.

"I think it rubbed off on a lot of the guys last year and (was part of the) success that we got to the back end of the year."

"We won a lot of games purely on excitement and enthusiasm. I think Crocker's a great man for it and he did a great job last year."

Meanwhile, Burgess declared himself a certain stater for the 'Back to Redfern' trial against UK side Warrington on January 28.

The big forward hasn't played since dislocating his ankle in April but is now back to full fitness.
