Bennett wants to stay

09/07/2010 08:28:22 PM

St George Illawarra coach Wayne Bennett may not be in a rush to decide whether he remains at the Dragons beyond next year - but he's also in no hurry to move on.

Bennett has guided the Dragons to back-to-back minor premierships and has the Red V in a tremendous position to break the club's 31-year title drought over the next four weeks.

The six-time premiership winner will return to his family in Queensland after the season is finished to contemplate his long-term future, but it would be a major shock if he didn’t extend his three-year stay.

"I'm going home in October-November and I'm going to think about a few things…see where I'm at," Bennett said on Tuesday.

"I may not (make a decision then) but I'll be back here in 2011, I know that."

"I'm in no rush (to formalise plans beyond 2011) - I don't see why I need to hurry."

"I think I've got a job here if I want it. There's no reason why I won't be here longer term."

Bennett almost plotted a premiership win in his first year at the club, admitting he was gutted when the Dragons bowed out of the '09 finals race on the back of consecutive losses.

But instead of burying the memory of that capitulation, the veteran coach believes it has driven his side to greater heights 12 months on.

"I hope it's been the motivation that has brought them back to this place," he said.

"None of us wanted to exit the way we did last year."

"We didn't cry over spilt milk and say we were unlucky; we did none of that."

"We came back and worked extremely hard to put ourselves in the same position as last year where we've got another opportunity to get right what we couldn't get right last year."

"I don't think anyone is going to waste any chances this year."

St George Illawarra's finals campaign begins against a depleted Manly at WIN Jubilee Oval on Sunday.
