Ridden by James McDonald, Mossfun ($5.50) overcame being last out of the barrier to save ground along the rail and fight off favourite Earthquake ($2.40) for victory in the $3.5 million race.

Victorian Bring Me The Maid ($11) made it a fillies' trifecta by finishing well for third.

Mossfun is trained by the Hawkes family - father John and sons Michael and Wayne.

Earlier, New Zealand mare Silent Achiever ($3.80) beat fellow Kiwi It's A Dundeel ($5) in the Group One The BMW (2400m).

It was Silent Achiever's third successive Group One victory.

On a day when the midweek death of top jockey Nathan Berry lent a sadness to proceedings, his life was remembered with a moving video tribute and a minute's silence on track.
