Our Say

Caulfield's Best

Caulfield's Best

1. VIEWED (Brad Rawiller)
Pro: Melbourne Cup winner and trained by Bart Cummings. Lead up form has been very good.
Con: Jockey is out of form - had 58 outs in Melbourne since his last winner and it's 20 months since he last rode a winner at Caulfield.
2. KIRKLEES (Kerrin McEvoy)
Pro: Godolphin won this race last year with All The Good and they say this guy is much better-performed.
Con: First time around Caulfield
3. C'EST LA GUERRE (Steven Arnold)
Pro: Third in last year's Melbourne Cup and won NZ Derby at only try this distance.
Con: Jockey hasn't ridden a winner at Caulfield since February, 2008. He's ridden one winner from his last 88 rides in Melbourne.
4. CIMA DE TRIOMPHE (Damien Oliver)
Pro: Jockey has won this race four times and trainer is a genius.
Con: Has failed at only two runs at this distance.
5. FIUMICINO (Dwayne Dunn)
Pro: Jockey and trainer (John Hawkes) have won this race previously.

Con: Has drawn poorly.

Pro: AJC Derby winner over this trip (with Predatory Pricer 3rd) and two from two on dead tracks (and Bart).
Con: Not convinced handles Melbourne way of going.
8. SARRERA (Nicholas Hall)
Pro: Has in-form jockey aboard.
Con: May trip over his beard (he's a nine-year-old, two years older than any other horse in the race).
9. PREDATORY PRICER (Steven King)
Pro: Jockey knows how to win this race and lead-up form is great.
Con: Awkward draw doesn't help.
10. RED RULER (Danny Nikolic)
Pro: Jockey has won race previously and is a genius on this track.
Con: Hasn't won for 20 months.
11. ZAVITE (Mark Zahra)
Pro: Shouldn't have any trouble leading from nice draw so will avoid any trouble.
Con: At this level, generally finds a couple better.
12. HARRIS TWEED (Craig Newitt)
Pro: Ran 2nd in the AJC Derby (to Roman Emperor)
Con: Best form is with more give in the ground.
13. LIGHT VISION (Luke Nolen)
Pro: Ultra consistent stayer and will race up on the pace.
Con: Drawn very wide.
14. DAFFODIL (Chris Munce)
Pro: AJC Oaks winner at this distance and won four of eight on dead tracks.
Con: Will the NZ form hold up?
15. READY TO LIFT (Glen Boss)
Pro: Jockey is red hot and won three of five at the trip.
Con: First time in a Group One (they picked a tough one to start off).
16. RED LORD (Glyn Schofield)

Con: Distance query at this level.
17. VIGOR (Corey Brown)
Pro: Huge weight drop from recent runs.
Con: Will have to pay a car park fee.
18. ALLEZ WONDER (Michelle Payne)
Pro: Bart and the "pretty" girl - the "feelgood" story of the race.
Con: Steep distance rise.
19. BAUGHURST 1st em (Ben Melham)
Pro: Looks a "good thing" in race seven.
Con: Light Vision is in the race - always beats him home
20. SHOCKING 2nd em
Pro: "Kav" in a Group One.
Con: Shocking barrier.
21. NEWPORT 3rd em (Peter Wells)
Pro: Last time he drew barrier one, he won the Brisbane Cup over this distance in 2007.
Con: He's third emergency.
22. MISS DARCEY 4th em
