John Wheeler's incredible domination of Oakbank is set to continue on Monday when the biggest day in the South Australian jumps racing calendar takes centre stage.
Wheeler has won Oakbank's famous Great Eastern Steeplechase over 4950 metres on eight occasions at the picturesque track in the Adelaide Hills and win number nine in the $160,000 event is within his grasp.
The master Kiwi horseman will saddle up hot favourite Toubouggie Nights, who could not have been more impressive in winning Saturday's traditional lead-up to the great race the Von Doussa Steeplechase over 3250m.
And while Touboggie Nights might have started at the generous odds of $17 on Saturday after punters again made the mistake of underestimating one of Wheeler's New Zealand jumpers, they won't be making the same mistake on Monday.
Toubouggie Nights, which was given a 1kg penalty for his one and three quarter length win on Saturday, is listed as a $3.20 favourite at TAB Sportsbet.
The main dangers are Cape Kinaveral ($3.60) and Big Jam ($8) which were the other two horses that ran impressive trials in the Von Doussa on Saturday.
Cape Kinaveral, which is also trained by Wheeler, ran a gallant second in the Von Doussa behind his stablemate, while the Jarrad McLean-trained Big Jam made up tremendous ground in the concluding stages to run fourth and looks like he will be ideally suited by the extra lap around the tight Oakbank circuit on Monday.
And two other horses in Pentacolo and It's a Dud both former winners in 2009 and 2010 respectively should both be thrown into multiples after completing their preparations with solid runs on the flat in Saturday's 3600 metre Yalumba Handicap.
