Turffontein has caused an upset in the Group One William Reid Stakes (1200m) a Moonee Valley to claim his second elite success in the past six months.
Ridden perfectly by Glen Boss, Turffontein ($14) charged down the outside to edge out Wanted ($4) with Sniper's Bullet flying home for third.
It is the talented five-year-old's second Group One win after his success in the Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield in September.
Nicconi ($3), who started favourite, failed miserably after having a good run in the race and a cloud hangs over plans to send him to Royal Ascot.
Shellscrape ($3.50) pulled up at the rear of the field after struggling to get around the tight Moonee Valley circuit.
Light Fantastic set the early speed, with Wanted on his outside, while Boss sat Turffontein just off the pace.
Nicconi sat fourth on the rail, but he was under pressure on turning, as Boss made his move and hit the front.
Wanted tried to rally underneath the eventual winner and would be beaten by only a neck on the line, while Sniper's Bullet impressed over the final 200m to be beaten by less than a length.
Trainer Anthony Cummings was delighted with Turffontein's success, saying he was a professional race horse who loved the sting out of the track.
Earlier, Linton ($3.50) announced himself as a future star with an ultra-impressive win in the Group Two Alistair Clark Stakes (1600m).
Michael Rodd brought the three-year-old, who was having his third start, from the rear of the field and he powered away to defeat Take the Rap ($12) with Offhanded ($4) third.
