Williams looking for success with Zoolu Power at Goulburn

Williams has known the Dubbo-based former trainer Bill Kelly since he was a boy and over many years they have shared success together with horses like Zoo City Lad and I'm A Tenor.

"We've had some nice horses over what has been a long association,” Williams said. "And we've had a bit of luck too.

"Bill has bred from the same family for a long period and it dates back to a mare named Dara's Time who was a half-sister to Vaindarra.

"I've had a lot to do with the family.”

Zoolu Power is a horse that Williams got second hand and the astute trainer admits to the lightly raced five-year-old mare by Power Of Destiny being a real handful. Despite her problems, Williams believes she has good ability.

"She does a lot wrong in her races,” he said. "I'm trying to curb her bad manners.

"She hangs and wants to fight the jockey. She used to buck and proved very difficult for the riders when I first got her.

"I'm still trying to educate her and get her on the mend. She does possess good ability.”

Williams struck pay dirt for Kelly when Zoolu Power scored first-up in a 1300m maiden at Goulburn back in November last year.

The mare was immediately spelled and resumed from a 243-days break with a length fourth when relegated from third in a Benchmark 55 Handicap at Goulburn on July 3. Her erratic manners cost her a placing.

Two starts later Zoolu Power found the right race winning a 1400m class one event at Goulburn on August 17 by three lengths.

"She could have won by further if she didn't do so much wrong,” Williams said. "But she did get to the line good. She's thriving at the moment. I'm very happy with her.”

Williams will also saddle up Luxury in the Maddens Stable Bedding Class 1 Handicap (1200m).

The mare looks well placed after drawing barrier one and coming off a 68-day freshen up from a $100,000 race at Doomben when sixth to Golden Falls on June 27.

"She didn't have a lot of luck at Doomben,” he said. "She missed the kick three or four lengths then was last turning for home. She ran on very strongly.

"If she behaves and jumps with them she'll be hard to hold out.”

Jason Collett partners both horses.
