Valiant Warrior won at Moonee Valley on the opening day of the racing season before Trinder prepared the gelding for a spring campaign in Tasmania, which culminated in a fourth in the Listed Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Launceston on November 18.

However, the time Valiant Warrior ran in Tasmania's Newmarket Handicap showed Trinder the son of West Quest was able to head back to Melbourne to tackle Saturday's William Hill Handicap (1200m).

"He travelled wide and he went 1:09.5 (for the 1200m) himself, which was a personal best time,” Trinder said.

"His previous best time over the six furlongs was 1:10.1.

"We deemed that he went super in the race, coming off a 10-day back-up with travel involved, which is always a risk.”

Valiant Warrior has drawn barrier one for Saturday's $80,000 race, the same gate from which the consistent galloper jumped when he scored at the Valley on August 1.

Trinder said the gate would allow regular jockey Anthony Darmanin to ensure he got cover on Valiant Warrior. The Spreyton-based trainer said cover would prevent the winner of seven of his 14 starts from over-racing, which he did when he finished eighth behind the subsequent Group II winner Churchill Dancer on August 22.

Punters have backed Valiant Warrior from $13 into $9 to make a successful return to Victoria but Trinder said Saturday's race would be the sprinter's last before a spell.

"I would suggest he'll have this run and he'll come home for a break, win, lose or draw,” Trinder said.

"Whilst he's thriving a doing well, from the perspective of gaining longevity out of his career, he'll be better off with a nice little rest.

"He's predominantly a six-furlong horse and aside from the Newmarket, they don't really cater for his sort of horse over the carnival.”
