Laing trusts instincts with Kentucky Flyer

Laing scratched Kentucky Flyer from Sunday's UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington after taking the conditions, and his gut, into account.

"I just didn't have a good feel about Sunday," Laing said. "30 degrees, barrier 19, we were going to go back and I thought at best, even allowing for a sensational run, he was going to run third or fourth.

"I thought, what am I doing going to Flemington trying to run third or fourth when, it's possibly not a vintage year, he's already won at 1500 metres and the Guineas is a million dollar race.”

Kentucky Flyer carried 60kg into third place behind Tarzino last time out at Caulfield on September 19 and has thrived since Laing said.

"He ran a bottler last start, ran his last 600m in 34.5 (seconds) so I'll go to the Caulfield Guineas and he's worth his place.

"He would have run well yesterday but possibly jar up on a firm track and only come away with place money.

"The Derby is still the aim and he can run in the Vase at Moonee Valley which gives me the two week gap in between, the same as I did with Polanski heading into his Derby.”

A son of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, Kentucky Flyer has won two of his four starts with more to come according to Laing

"I really like him. He's got a touch more brilliance than Polanski and he's a good colt.”
