The five-year-old mare by Flying Spur out of the Zabeel mare Lady Zabelia chases back-to-back wins in the TKM Engineering Riverside Stayer's Challenge Benchmark 60 Handicap over the marathon 2700 metres.

"She's in good form that's for sure," Stitt said. "That's the Zabeel coming out in her and maturity. They (Zabeel's) generally don't come good until five.

"All of a sudden she's struck form, hit her straps and really going well. If she didn't strike form this time around she was probably going to go to stud.

"With good mares once they hit form they generally hold it."

Three starts back Lady With Spurs struck winning form scoring by a dominant 4.8 lengths in a 2208 metre class one handicap at Grafton on September 5.

The mare, who stands around 16.2 hands and is a gross doer, then was run down on the post over 2200 metres at Bowraville on September 26.

Last time out Lady With Spurs made a sustained run to win over 2370 metres at Grafton on October 2 with Ben Looker in the saddle who retains the mount on Saturday.

Lady With Spurs is a half-sister to the Gerald Ryan-trained Time For War and cost $17,000 as a yearling for Terry Marskell. Marskell, a part-owner, races the mare on lease to a number of friends.

Stitt tried to buy Time For War, a subsequent dual Group II winner who has just taken up stud duties, at the sales the year after he secured Lady With Spurs.

"I had $35,000 to spend but he went for $80,000. I was out paddling a long way from home," Stitt joked.

Stitt describes Lady With Spurs as "a typical Flying Spur mare".

"She's a lot like her old man but has that great staying blood through Zabeel," he said. "She's a gross doing mare who you have got to keep up to the mark with work. She's as tough as teak.

"She's still managing to get into races with light weights (54.5kg) and she's drawn well on Saturday (barrier two).

"I've just poked around with her since Grafton but she's done very well and pleased me. The extra distance is no worry."
