High Chaparral colt to debut early at Moonee Valley

The deceased High Chaparral is better known as a sire of Derby winners but Shoot Out and Last Bullet have given the sire two-year-old stakes winners. However, both horses notched their Group wins in the autumn and winter.

Interestingly, High Chaparral has produced nine two-year-old winners from 49 runners from that age group in Australia.

Theanswermyfriend has shown Smerdon enough since entering his Caulfield stable to convince the trainer to start his career on Saturday in the Super VOBIS two-year-old race over 1000m at Moonee Valley.

Theanswermyfriend has progressed sufficiently to finish second in a trial at Cranbourne on November 9 before pleasing Smerdon with his effort in a jumpout at Sandown.

Smerdon said he has looked at how Theanswermyfriend's progress rather than the colt's pedigree when deciding when to give him his race debut.

"A High Chaparral running as a two-year-old before Christmas, it doesn't seem right but they (horses) are what they are,” Smerdon said.

"He's out of a Danehill mare so maybe there's some of that coming through. He shows a bit of Danehill precocity.

"He has got some ability so we'll see how he measures up on Saturday.”

Smerdon has also nominated Theanswermyfriend for a race at Morphettville but Smerdon said he would run him and stablemate Key Evidence at Moonee Valley.

The Aquanita Racing trainer also entered Instant Action, who defeated Theanswermyfriend in his Cranbourne trial, for the Morphettville race.
