Grane finished fourth behind Trevinder over 955 metres at his previous start and made the most of a five kilogram turnaround in the weights in this contest.

Settled away from the early speed set by Vatican, Grane ($6.50) began to build momentum passing the 600m and finished too well for his rivals, defeating Trevinder ($10) by half a length with Sistine Demon ($7.50) the same distance away third.

It was the second win at the course for the son of Purrealist and trainer Robbie Griffiths said the six-year-old is suited by the turns.

"He likes it around here, he had to come around them there but it was a gret ride by Jye (McNeil),” Griffiths said.

"He's been racing in the shorter races with big weights and it's hard work for him to make the ground.

"Today the rail was true, he had a nice drop in weight and an extra 45 metres so it all worked out nicely."

Griffiths said he intends keeping Grane to shorter trips.

"He's a very consistent horse and always runs well. We'll just look for another race like this,” Griffiths said.

"He's had a throat operation and it hasn't been completely perfect so it's easier for him to run at 1000 (metres).”
