Gawler - Give 'costly' Riccone another chance

Riccone is a $2.70 chance to win the Goldin Farms Maiden Plate (1700m) but the Tony McEvoy-trained gelding has let his backers down at two of his last three starts.

Riccone was backed from $4.60 to $3.80 before finishing 5-3/4 lengths from Lucksa when third on heavy ground at Gawler on July 26.

The son of Nicconi started as a $2.45 favourite at his first run for five weeks at Murray Bridge on September 23 before working home to finish fifth to Bestihaveeverhad over 1400m.

However, the stewards' report from the meeting showed Riccone had excuses for his unplaced effort.

"Riccone lost it near hind plate during the event,” the stewards' report read.

"Riccone was examined by the Club's Veterinary surgeon who reported the gelding to have low grade lameness due to losing its off hind plate during the event.”

The four-year-old will step out to 1700m for the first time in Wednesday's $12,000 contest, which has boosted the Racenet team's confidence in Riccone turning in a winning performance.

"Riccone thus far has been proving to be an extremely costly conveyance to follow but surely this appears to be his right race,” the Racenet summary of the race read.

"Looks to be desperate for the 1700m which he gets here.”

Matthew Neilson will be aboard Riccone again at Gawler. The gelding is a $2.70 favourite in a competitive Sportsbet market.

Catch Me Later is a $3.40 second pick while Mons Abila and Gold Initio are $4.80 chances in the eight-horse field.
