Cricklewood ready to break maiden status at Nowra

Cricklewood is one of four horses Callaughan got from the former head trainer at Shipton Lodge, Cobbitty.

Cricklewood lines up in the Coates Hire Nowra Maiden Plate (1400m) with leading country jockey Richard Bensley in the saddle.

"When Anne-Marie decided to give it away I rang to see if she wanted to get rid of any horses,” Callaughan said. "In the end I finished up getting four horses off her.

"I went down and picked them up a couple of weeks before Cricklewood's first start for me (September 21).

"He'd had two trials at Warwick Farm but I just wished I could have had him a little longer.

"He wasn't quite ready at Goulburn but he's come on good since. I expect him to run a good race on Tuesday.”

Cricklewood had three starts under Jason Reilly before being transferred to Ruttley and subsequently Callaughan.

"He's a nice little horse,” Callaughan said. "He's only lightly framed though. He could probably do with 30 or 40 more kilos but that's just him at the moment.

"He looks better in the coat now and he's come on good.

"His work's been good and on his breeding I reckon he'll get further over time.”

Cricklewood drew wide at Goulburn and was caught three wide just off the leaders with no cover. Despite the hard run in transit the lightly raced four-year-old kept coming in the straight to finish third to Aspidistra and Regal Rojo, beaten two lengths over 1300m.

"He should be able to settle just off the speed at Nowra and have the last crack at them,” Callaughan said.
