Contrasting challenges for Avdulla on Saturday

In the Bedford CA Handicap (1500m), Avdulla will continue his recent association with the Patrick Webster-trained Happy Clapper, a horse that has won four of his last five starts.

The pair combined to win first-up over 1200 metres at Randwick on October 24 and a barrier trial win last week has the son of Teofilo in pole position to continue his winning ways.

"I'm looking forward to riding him, he won well first-up and went back to the trials and trialled well,” Avdulla said.

"He's drawn well on Saturday and I think the horse is very talented so I expect him to be hard to beat again.”

Happy Clapper was also nominated for Saturday's Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on Monday before Webster decided to take the easier option in the benchmark 85 contest.

That decision allowed Avdulla to keep the ride on Gerald Ryan's tough gelding Red Excitement.

Red Excitement was beaten almost nine lengths last start in the Group III Chatham Stakes (1400m) in Melbourne but Avdulla, who has partnered the horse on 10 previous occasions, said there were extenuating circumstances.

"The Flemington track didn't suit him that day,” Avdulla said.

"He needs firm tracks and probably needed the run as well.

"I think Saturday looks a nice progressive race for him and he should improve.”

Like Happy Clapper, Red Excitement was also sent back to the trials after his first-up run and performed strongly.

Online bookmaker Ladbrokes has Happy Clapper and Red Excitement quoted at $3.70 and $12 in their respective races.
