Clipperton patiently waiting for Group I glory

Clipperton has been riding in the form of his life since making the transition from apprentice to senior jockey last year

After notching seven stakes wins last season, Clipperton has already registered another six black type successes during the first two months of the current term.

Group II victories in the Chelmsford Stakes and Shannon Stakes would suggest that Clipperton is edging ever closer to a maiden Group I but the young hoop is happy to wait his turn, whether it be for racing powerhouse Godolphin, his former mentor Ron Quinton, or another trainer.

"I think the more I try to make it happen, the more it's not going to happen so I'm just going to let things take their natural course,” Clipperton said.

"I reckon it will happen when I least expect it.”

Clipperton's latest Group I opportunity comes this Saturday at Randwick where he rides the Luke Price-trained Man Of Choice in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

The pair have been afforded an inside draw in the $500,000 contest, a factor which Clipperton believes could prove significant in repelling the odds-on favourite Vanbrugh.

"I like where we've drawn,” Clipperton said.

"We should get a nice run from there and he's going to run out the trip really strong.

"Obviously Vanbrugh had an amazing turn of foot last start and went on to win well but my horse is on an upward spiral and could be the forgotten one.

"If luck falls our way, I think he will run a very bold race.”

Man Of Choice is an $8.50 chance on Saturday with online bookmaker Sportsbet.
