Alcopop wins Mackinnon Stakes

There was a boilover of sorts in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday with underrated galloper Alcopop upstaging Cox Plate winner Ocean Park to claim the Group One race.

Fans of the flavoured alcoholic beverage were cheering hard in the final 200m as Alcopop ran down tearaway leader Glass Harmonium in the closing stages with odds-on favourite Ocean Park beaten into third.

Ocean Park, who started the race as a $1.70 favourite on the back of his impressive Cox Plate victory last week, had every chance and all the honours were with the winner.

Alcopop settled well back in the field, but was well suited by the hot pace set in front by Damien Oliver onboard Glass Harmonium and swooped home late along the rails to land the prize.

The victory marks a career highlight for Jake Stephens and the trainer from the South Australian town of Victor Harbor was stoked after the race.

"The horse is just a champion and he has made me as a trainer," he said.

"It was a brilliant ride for him to come up the inside them and sit inside Ocean Park."

That 'brilliant ride' came from in-form jockey Craig Williams, who 'outfoxed' Glen Boss onboard Ocean Park to save ground on the rails and take the spoils.

"The race is all about him and Jake Stephens for what they've done," Williams said.

"I love that they actually targeted this race and didn't go too many times.

"It was nice competition when Damien (Oliver) went out in front and you know that horse (Glass Harmonium) won the race last year and is hard to run down and we only just got him late."
