Preferment ($11) came from worse than midfield into the home straight to overwhelm stablemate Royal Descent ($6) and score by a short-head with Set Square ($19) three-quarters of a length away third.

Trainer Chris Waller is now looking further ahead with Preferment, who firmed to $11 from $15 with Sportsbet for the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

"He's a very exciting horse and it's good to see him showing speed over 2000 metres, especially against some of the better horses going around,” Waller said.

"He's a pretty special horse. He's matured this year, he was a maiden when he won the Derby last year but he wasn't pushed, we just let him get there himself.

"Usually the Derby is not a good guide to the Melbourne Cup but I think this horse might be different.

"Obviously a Cox Plate comes into the equation now, I guess it's a good problem to have.”

Waller was delighted with the effort of Royal Descent.

"Her run was gallant, she was there for a long way in the home straight and Preferment had the drop on her.”

Preferment completed the trip in 2:01.34 with less than two lengths covering the first 10 home.

Dandino stayed on in the home straight to finish fourth, Hartnell came from last at the home turn to finish sixth and Volkstok'n'barrell stayed on well for ninth after setting the pace with Weary, who knocked up to finish last.
