2015 George Moore Stakes - Profiting from track bias

When a track is as biased as Flemington was, the formguide can be misleading, which provides opportunities to find value amongst runners that were disadvantaged.

Two horses which were disadvantaged on Victoria Derby day that have since come out and won at their subsequent starts are Delectation and Famous Seamus.

Delectation was disadvantaged when fourth in the Group II Linlithgow (1200m) before coming out seven days later and claiming the Group I Darley Classic (1200m) at $14.

Famous Seamus was similarly disadvantaged finishing sixth in the Group III Chatham Stakes (1400m) before coming out a fortnight later to win the Group III Heffernan Stakes (1400m) at Sandown, paying $8.50.

Fontelina was perhaps the most hindered runner to come through the Linlithgow Stakes and has been kept fresh since, tackling the Group III George Moore Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Ridden by Damien Oliver off a wide barrier, Fontelina was never closer than four horses off the fence in the Linlithgow, clocking three consecutive sub 11 second 200-metre splits between the 1000m and 400m, before tiring late to finish ninth behind Éclair Choice.

"As it turned out it was a waste of time,” Fontelina's trainer Tony Gollan said.

"He was exposed all the way on the wrong part of the track.

"I've freshened him up, he's third-up off a spell and he's spot on for Saturday.”

Gollan has five of the 12 starters in the $200,000 sprint with Fontelina quoted at $9.50 with Luxbet.

"He looks super,” Gollan said. "He's overs.”

Gollan's pair Temple Of Boom ($5) and Didntcostalot ($5) are shorter in betting and must also be given serious thought.

"Temple Of Boom is first-up and has 59.5kg so you could say he is vulnerable,” Gollan said.

"But he's a grand old horse and I couldn't be happier with him. It's been a long time since he's raced in this type of grade so he won't know himself.

"Didntcostalot is up sharply in grade but has been going great and has earned his spot in the field.

"One thing about him is that he will go fast and run time.”

Gundy Spirit ($41) and Casual Choice ($26) round out the Gollan-trained quintet.

In the $100,000 Listed Zetta 1 Mode Plate 3YO Fillies (1200m), Gollan trains the favourite Secret Saga ($3.50) and the lightly raced Suite Mover ($18).

"The wide barrier is the big worry for Secret Saga,” Gollan said. "You need luck going into that first corner or the race can be all over.

"But in saying that the set weights is in her favour and she's versatile.”

"Suite Mover is better than a Class 1 filly which is what she's eligible for. This is a big step up but she's promising.”
