2015 Festival Stakes - Class no concern for Zanbagh

Not that Zanbagh lacks anything in class.

She won the Group III Keith Nolan Stakes (1600m) at Kembla Grange in the autumn of 2014 and was runner-up in the Group I Crown Oaks and Group I ATC Oaks in a successful three-year-old season when trained by the late Guy Walter.

A move to Victoria and the Patrick Payne stable in late 2014 failed to deliver intended results with only one placing from 11 starts.

Coming back to Sydney and into the John Thompson yard yielded immediate success, with Kathy O'Hara steering the now five-year-old mare home over 1350m on a heavy track when specked from $41 into $21.

"She was helped by the heavy track at Rosehill but in saying that I was positive she would run well regardless of the track condition,” Thompson said.

"The original plan was to go straight into the Villiers after that first-up run but she's just doing too well.

"Second-up is always a worry coming off such a sharp first-up win but she's given no indication that run has taken the edge off her so I'm confident she'll run well again.”

Thompson still has the $250,000 Group II Villiers Stakes (1600m) on the agenda but will take it one run a time.

"For now it's just a matter of keeping her fresh,” Thompson said. "The Summer Cup on Boxing Day could be an option but it really depends on how she does.”

Zanbagh is $16 with CrownBet for Saturday's Festival Stakes.
