2015 Epsom Handicap result - Winx notches a half-century for Waller

Records are made to be broken and Chris Waller continues to smash them in staggering fashion.

Winx's victory makes it three consecutive Epsom Handicap victories for the Rosehill-based trainer after Boban in 2013 and He's Your Man last year.

Sydney's leading trainer has also won the past three Doncaster Miles - making it six consecutive Randwick Group I mile handicaps - a first for any trainer.

"It's very special,” Waller said. "When I started training I would have been happy to just win one Group I.”

Hugh Bowman has built an amazingly successful relationship with Waller, but had never won an Epsom Handicap and needed all of his skill to get race favourite Winx home after striking serious bother approaching the home turn.

"The pressure starts to build and I was chopped out of that run,” Bowman said. "For the mare to regather herself, recompose and be able to finish like that is the sign of a horse we're going to hear a lot more of.”

Bowman's description of the power unleashed by Waller's four-year-old Street Cry mare is one for the rev-heads.

"The only way I can describe it is hopping out of an ordinary four-cylinder vehicle and hopping into a high powered V8 and putting your foot on it,” Bowman said.

Winx ($3.10 fav) prevailed by 2-1/4 lengths from the Gai Waterhouse-trained Ecuador ($26) with Jason Attard's Sons Of John ($18) a further half-head away in third.

Confident pre-race, Waller, along with most punters, was understandably nervous when the interference before the turn took place.

"It was an awful scrimmage turning for home,” Waller said. "I admit I closed my eyes hoping for the best.

"To pick herself up after that, put herself back in the race then burst through to win like she did is pretty special.

"Her winning strike-rate separates her from the other horses. She overcome barrier draws, track conditions and distances.”

History said mares rarely win an Epsom Handicap, and it was unheard of to win the race second-up off a spell. Winx is re-writing that history, as is her trainer.

The 2015 Group I Cox Plate is now under serious consideration.

"She goes to Melbourne now,” Waller said. "It will be the Myer or the Cox Plate.”
