Europe have dominated the biennial golf tournament in recent years, winning seven of the last nine.
United States have not won the event on European soil since 1993 but will hope to defy the odds and triumph at Gleneagles this week.
And Woosnam feels an upset is possible, citing Team USA's united group as a potentially crucial factor in Scotland.
Woosnam – who made eight Ryder Cup appearances as a player before captaining Europe to their 2006 success – said: "I think they' [USA] are a closer team.
"A few of those guys are very close to each other, a tight knit family lets say. I'm sure [US captain] Tom Watson will keep it that way in the team room.
"He won't be taking any negativity in that team room at all, so I imagine that's why they've picked Tom Watson as captain.
"There'll be no one player dominating as captain, or players dominating the captain."
Woosnam also feels the absence of Tiger Woods may help Team USA's hopes.
Woods is widely regarded as the greatest player of the modern era and has won 14 major titles – although none have come after his 2008 US Open triumph.
"You have a look at the teams he's been in and how many times has he won? I think maybe once," Woosnam said.
"Nothing against Tiger Woods - greatest player in the world - but it's not just him that hasn't blended in, it just hasn't seemed to have worked.
"Maybe if he had been in the Europe team he would have won, it's just the way it's turned out, Europe have been better."
