Woods records career-worst round

Former world number one Tiger Woods reached a new low on Friday as he carded a career-worst round of 82 at the second day of the Phoenix Open.

Woods' toils were well documented in 2014 as he struggled with persistent back problems, but the new season has barely begun in better fashion.

The 39-year-old's previous worst ever round was his 81 in the Open Championship back in 2002, but a bogey on the final hole on Friday saw him break that unwanted record.

After making a two-over 73 on the opening day's play, Woods had work to do to make the cut, which is projected to be at even par.

But the 14-time major champion suffered a nightmare round in Phoenix as he fell to dead last on the leaderboard at the end of his day.

Starting on the 10th, Woods was one over through his opening four holes before a double-bogey six on the 14th and a triple-bogey eight on the next.

Woods dropped further shots on the 17th and 18th, meaning his score on the outward nine was an eight-over 44.

Three consecutive pars stopped the rot at the start of his inward nine, but a double bogey on the fourth set Woods back further.

He finally picked up a shot on the par-four fifth, but two more bogeys on six and seven undid that good work.

A birdie on the penultimate hole raised hopes of perhaps avoiding setting a new mark for his worst ever score, but yet another bogey put paid to that as Woods finished 13 over-par for the tournament.

Woods managed to raise a smile after his round when talking to reporters, channelling NFL star Marshawn Lynch, grinning: "I'm just here so I won't get fined."
