Woods on road to recovery

Woods has not featured on the PGA Tour since missing the cut at the US PGA Championship last month after suffering a recurrence of his long-standing back injury.

The 38-year-old American also made himself unavailable for the upcoming Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and his prolonged lay-off has led to rumours of an imminent retirement from the sport which he dominated for so long.

But the 14-time major winner confirmed that while he will return, he is still some way off.

"I haven't swung a golf club yet. I've only been shadow swinging without a club but I've been busting my butt in the gym pretty hard," said Woods.

"I've got my strength back, which is nice. Now the next goal is to get my explosiveness – that’s the next phase of my training.

"I'm just trying to get physically better, stronger, faster, more explosive."

Woods added: "Would I like to play? There's no doubt, yes.

"I miss competing, I miss playing, I miss being out here with the guys, I miss all that, but I'm not physically ready for it yet."
