The 24-year-old American was strong at Pinehurst, setting herself up well for a shot at her maiden major win.

Wie holed three birdies and a bogey as most others struggled.

American Lexi Thompson (68) sits three shots back at one under, the only other player under the card in North Carolina.

South Korean Amy Yang (69), Australian Minjee Lee (71) and American overnight leader Stacy Lewis (73) are tied for third at even par.

Defending champion and world number two Park Inbee carded a disappointing 71, but sits at seven over and tied for 38th.

Lucy Li, the 11-year-old who is the youngest ever qualifier for the tournament, missed the cut after another 78 saw her end up at 16 over.

While Wie was consistent, Thompson was left to lament a bogey at the 18th after a run of three straight birdies had set up her round.

Yang's rollercoaster round included four birdies and three bogeys, while Lee holed three bogeys and two birdies.

Lewis, so consistent in her opening-round 67, produced six bogeys and three birdies as she struggled.

South Korean Choi Na-yeon (70) is sixth at one over, a shot ahead of Japan's Sakura Yokomine (68), Colombian Mariajo Uribe (70) and American Paula Creamer (72).

Tied for 10th are Northern Ireland's Stephanie Meadow (72), American Angela Stanford (72), Australian Karrie Webb (73) and South Korean Ryu So-yeon (74).
