Wales Open offers Ryder Cup warm-up chance

Celtic Manor was the scene of Europe's 2010 Ryder Cup triumph and will host this week's Wales Open.

A quartet of Paul McGinley's European team are among the field at the Newport course, with Thomas Bjorn, Stephen Gallacher, Lee Westwood and Jamie Donaldson capitalising on the opportunity to fine-tune their games ahead of the Gleneagles showdown with the United States next week.

Westwood and Bjorn were both involved in the success four years ago, although the Dane undertook a vice-captain's role.

And Westwood, one of three captain's picks this time around, regards the Wales Open as the perfect preparation for taking on the USA.

"From everything I know and have heard, it's going to be the ideal place to play the week before the Ryder Cup," he told the European Tour website.

"Paul's attention to detail will ensure we are all perfectly prepared wherever we are coming from, but I'm thrilled that Wales will be my starting point."

Scotsman Gallacher and home favourite Donaldson will be making their Ryder Cup debuts and the chance to compete on a course where Europe prevailed as hosts last time out may provide an added boost for the challenge that awaits them.

The defending Wales Open champion is in no danger of being distracted by the showpiece event at Gleneagles, with Frenchman Gregory Bourdy not involved for Europe.

He sunk three consecutive birdies on the final three holes to win by two shots from American Peter Uihlein last year and has some happy recollections of his own from the famous course.

"It was an amazing finish last year, with three amazing putts," Bourdy told the European Tour website.

"I've some amazing memories of that course, so it will be great to go back. I've been waiting for it for a few weeks now because I've not played that great, so hopefully it will help inspire me."

Paul Casey was overlooked for a wildcard selection for the Ryder Cup but shrugged off that disappointment with victory at the KLM Open last time out, and he will be seeking to prove a point when the tournament begins on Thursday.
