American duo Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele fired an opening round of nine under 63 on Friday to share the lead with Mark Calcavecchia and Nick Price at the Franklin Templeton Shootout.

Bradley and Steele took an obvious liking to the modified alternate shot format used during the opening round, while veterans Calcavecchia and Price were just as impressive on the Gold Course at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.

Price shot a hole in one at the 12th hole and then sunk a long birdie at the last, while Bradley and Steele played the final six holes seven under.

Sitting one shot behind the lead are American pair Jerry Kelly and Steve Stricker, while youngster Rickie Fowler and his Columbian partner Camilo Villegas are a further shot adrift after a 65.

Sean O'Hair and Jason Dufner are on their lonesome in fifth after carding a 66, while there are three pairings sharing sixth at five-under.

Tournament host Greg Norman and American partner Scott McCarron endured a tough day on the greens and will commence the second round in 11th place, some six shots from the leaders.

Saturday's second round will take place under the better ball system where each player plays through every hole using their own ball, while the final 18 holes on Sunday will use yet another format.

On Sunday, each golfer will hit a drive on every hole and then both players will play a second shot from where the best tee shot is placed and so on, until the hole is finished.
