Merritt in control at RBC Heritage

TroyMerritt - Cropped

Troy Merritt will take a three-shot lead into the final round of the RBC Heritage as a couple of big names close in.

The American, who tied the course record at Harbour Town Golf Links with a 10-under 61 on Friday, produced a solid 69 to move into 14 under.

But Merritt, 29, will have plenty of competition during the final round as he chases his maiden PGA Tour win.

Defending champion Matt Kuchar (68) is one of three players at 11 under, with Brendon Todd (63) and Kevin Kisner (67) alongside him.

Masters winner Jordan Spieth, who started slowly with a 74, backed up his strong second-round 62.

The 21-year-old American carded a three-under 68 to get into nine under.

Bo Van Pelt (67) is alongside Spieth, while Brice Garnett (65), Branden Grace (66) and Jim Furyk (68) are a shot ahead of the duo.

Merritt was left to rue a double bogey at the par-four eighth, with the rest of his round including four birdies.

Kuchar also had a double bogey, his came at the seventh, while Spieth encountered no such problems.

Spieth started his round with a bogey at the first but made no mistake after that, holing two birdies on the front nine and another two on the back.

A group of seven players are tied for 10th, including Englishman Luke Donald and Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell.
