Toms buries final-day woes

American David Toms claimed the Crowne Plaza Invitational in Texas on Sunday with a final round of 67.

The victory was Toms' first success of any kind since his Sony Open in Hawaii in January 2006 and was impressive as he responded from a horror round on Saturday.

He edged South Korean Charlie Wi by one stroke to win the US$1.16 million prize, while Bo Van Pelt finished in outright third.

"I played a great round of golf," Toms said.

Heading into the weekend's action, Toms held a whopping seven-shot lead and seemed set to make up for his collapse at last week's The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, which forced him into a playoff which he ended up losing to KJ Choi.

But he shot a four-over-par 74, and Wi fired a 66 to somehow snatch a one-shot lead heading into the final round.

Without the pressure of holding the lead though, Toms was far more composed and he made just one blemish for the day, which came on the penultimate 17th.

But birdies on the seventh and 14th and an eagle on the 11th was good enough for him to win the title, as it was Wi's turn to falter under the pressure.

"It just took a lot of guts. That's what I got by on," Toms said.

Wi was far too erratic when it counted, with five birdies and four bogeys in his one-under round of 69.

Van Pelt finished impressively, with a five-under 65 which included five birdies and an eagle while Zach Johnson shot the same score and claimed fourth place.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson and American Chez Reavie tied for fifth at eight-under, while Kevin Stadler, Bill Haas and Australian John Senden all finished in the top 10, with the latter hitting a three-over 73 to finish on a disappointing note.

Kris Blanks, Kevin Streelman, Rod Pampling, Hunter Mahan, Martin Laird and Paul Goydos were all involved in a six-way tie for 10th while world number 10 Matt Kuchar finished in a tie for 16th, finishing at four-over-par.
